LOCATION

The BSNLP 2009 workshop will be held in Kraków (Cracow). Kraków is one of the largest and the oldest cities in Poland. The history of this city dates back to the 7th century. By the end of the 10th century, the city was a leading trading centre. From this time come the oldest buildings in Kraków such as St. Adalbert's Church. In 1038 Kraków became the capital of Poland and it stayed a capital till 1596. In memory of that fact the official name of Kraków used on ceremonial occasions is Royal Capital City of Kraków.

Nowadays Kraków is an important center of science, education (it hosts the Jagiellonian University, the oldest Polish university) and business. Thanks to its history, monuments, unique atmosphere of the old town district and excellent restaurants Kraków attracts turists from all parts of the world.

ARRIVAL

Arrival by air

Balice Airport is the second biggest airport in Poland, with frequent domestic and international charter and scheduled flights. There are several direct arrivals every day from all over Europe, including London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Belfast, Milan, Cologne, Berlin, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Rome, Vienna, and Zürich. Services also fly from Chicago and New York in the USA and there are summer flights to more destinations, including Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey.

There is a train station at the airport and trains run to 'Dworzec Glowny PKP' (Kraków central station) approximately every 30 minutes. You can walk to the station, as it is only 250m from the airport, or take a free shuttle in front of the airport.

Arrival by train

Dworzec Glowny PKP is the central station in Kraków, and is located just outside of the Old Town. It is connected to other cities in Poland and the rest of Europe. Every hour between 6 AM and 8 PM there is either Express (EX) or Intercity (IC) train between Kraków and Warsaw that does not stop on the way and journey takes less than 3 hours. It is by far the most convenient way of traveling between Warsaw and Kraków.

International trains arrive daily from Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Bratislava, Kosice, Lviv, Kiev and Odessa with connections to the rest of Europe.

Arrival by car

Arriving by car to Kraków is quite easy. You can reach the city from Wroclaw on the A4 or from Warsaw on the A1. For the exact directions we recommend checking Google maps, www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com.

Workshop Venue

Pawilon D5 (building D5) Katedry Telekomunikacji AGH (Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza), ul. Czarnowiejska 78, Kraków (on the AGH campus, entrance directly from Czarnowiejska Street).

It can be accessed by public transport: using tram 13, start from the Dworzec Glowny ("Main Station"), direction: "Bronowice Małe", and then change at "Plac Inwalidów" stop to take bus 159, direction: "Cichy Kacik", get off at "Kawiory" bus stop).

Those arriving by car can access building D5 from the parking to the south. The parking is accessible form Reymonta str. through Miechowska str. or Akademicka str.

Transport

Public transport is based around a fairly dense network of tramway and bus lines operated by a municipal company (MPK), supplemented by a number of private minibus operators. Local trains connect some of the suburbs. The bulk of the city’s historic area has been turned into a pedestrian zone with rickshaws and horse buggies; however, the tramlines run within a three-block radius.
